Expert Tips to Prepare for an IPL Photofacial

People use IPL Photofacials to treat many conditions, including sun spots, spider veins, scar tissue, and discoloration in the skin. The specialized device uses light energy to target specific colors in the skin, leaving it looking more even and youthful.

IPL Photofacial treatments take several sessions depending on the skin condition, making a preparation plan essential to maximizing results. Before getting an IPL treatment, there are some fundamental expert tips on how to prepare for IPL.

Avoid Direct Sunlight or Tanning Beds

Tanning changes your overall skin tone, making it difficult for the IPL lightwaves to pinpoint the deeper tones of the target blemishes. Therefore, avoid direct sunlight, tanning beds, or faux tans for at least six weeks before starting IPL.

Direct sunlight without sunscreen exposes your skin to UV rays, which could harm your skin after an IPL treatment. As you will likely need somewhere between four to six treatments with four weeks between, a dedicated skincare plan must include sunscreen and careful sun exposure when outdoors.

Do Not Exfoliate Prior to Treatment

It is best not to exfoliate for at least a week before your treatment to avoid sensitive skin and unwanted side effects like irritation or flushed, blistered skin. Instead, wash your face with a gentle cleanser without rubbing your skin.

After your IPL treatment, your skin will be hypersensitive. Therefore, you should avoid hot showers or baths for the first 24 hours. Instead, wash your face the evening of your IPL Photofacial using lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser, being careful not to rub your tender skin.

Stop Using Certain Medications and Products

Certain products and medications can make your skin more sensitive or irritated from IPL facials. Even caffeine or alcohol consumption can affect the outcome. So avoid them for at least three days before your session.

You should avoid certain skincare products and medications before your IPL Photofacial. They may lead to bruising, swelling, or prevent healing.

Skincare containing:

- Retin-A

- Retinol

- Benzoyl Peroxide

- Glycolic or Salicylic Acids

- Astringents

- Vitamin C

Medications:

- Antibiotics (at least seven days before treatment)

- Aspirin (at least ten days before treatment)

- Anti-inflammatories (Advil or Motrin at least five days before treatment)

- Vitamin E (at least five days before treatment)

Your practitioner will ask for a detailed medical history to determine if you are a good candidate for IPL treatments. People who are pregnant or on blood thinners should not have IPL treatments. Never go off medication without consulting your physician.

Drink Water Before Treatment

Drinking plenty of water before and after your IPL Photofacial helps to keep the skin hydrated and minimize dryness. In addition, water helps to prevent excessive dryness as your skin begins to heal from your facial, making it feel less irritated or sore. You’ll also be less likely to scratch or pick at the target areas.

Plan Accordingly for Your Treatment Plan

As you can see, IPL treatments are more involved than simply walking into a spa for a relaxing facial. Therefore, you need to know how to prepare for IPL before each session and how to coordinate your routine leading up to your next one. Your esthetician will create a treatment plan and prep regimen once you decide that IPL is for you.
